Crispy Predawn near Banff

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
... aka Early Awakening ...
Three years and one month ago, we had left Calgary before the sun was up for a trip to British Columbia. By the time we had reached the Rockies the first light of day was starting to hit the snow-covered mountain-tops. A slight colouration of the lower clouds also added to the feeling of daybreak. It was still very chilly, and the moon dead ahead in the almost clear Westerly sky added to the feeling of the crisp coldness.
When I saw this scene, I pulled over, got out of the car, shivered, waited for the other vehicles to disappear down the road, shivered again, shot the photo and moved on... Brrr, I needed a cuppa coffee!
Sometimes Nature - although spectacular - is not that inviting ...
We're in the Banff National Park here. The sun is just starting to rise behind us and is hitting the mountains in front of us, which are in the West, where we also see the moon, which forgot to set early!
PS Peter Stoekle mentioned that the original post only used abt 50Kb of the avaiable 200Kb; I reworked this post accordingly.
PS2 I also put a WS version up, which includes some aspects I like, but makes the sky brighter than I recall it... |

Hello Jay,
Looks good to me Jay, I need to get to the mountains soon or I'll scream. Colors and mood are great in this image. Now I found out how I was screwing up marking your workshops, I fixed all of them.

Hi Jay.
Very nice moony sky, impressive darkened road and surroundings. This shot creates the mood of long way and future adventures. POV, cropping and composition are perfect too. My best regards and TFS.
Alexei.
P.S. Are you a birdman? :))
Hello Jay,
thank you for notifying me about that reposting. Chilly cold scenery, indeed, and very well reported, too. If the scenery in April 2007 is still looking much like that I understand your recent saying of "Snowa Scatia" very well.
Now that you have posted an image with less compression of data, postprocessing with slightly reducing contrast and slightly lightening up the dark parts does have a chance to bring out a few details in the dark parts that are looking uniformely black.
But in the end: what counts is the impression you had, and not what any postprocessing made out of it, of course.
Have a good day, and a great summer that will come soon!
With best regards,
Peter

Hi Jay,
oh how i am missing those cold winter mornings, when you´re riding the chairlift ´cause you have a ski lesson and the sun is just starting to shine... that peace, that silence, those blue colours.
Really good picture, because you´ve capture all those things i´m trying to tell you.
I like the POV, with the light over the white mountains at the back, gives a strange sensation of depth.
TFS
regards
Brenda
