This little fellow surprised me very much with it's behaviour.

This is a Sand Lizard Lacerta agilis. Judging on the size and colouration it was a juvenile, so I can't really say was it a female or a male. Anyway, I know them quite well because they live on sandy banks of the pond behind my house and I had many ocassions to photograph them.

I noticed that when you get too close they usually escape quickly or at least stay in one place trying not to move and not to be noticed. When you find such lizard you can sometimes pick it up and it won't even try to run away.

Here you can find a good example of such lizard. In that post you can also read some info and see two other pictures posted as a workshops.

Anyway, these little fellow did something quite different. He simply turn to me, open his mouth and started to hiss on me!

At first I was so surprised that I had no idea what's going on. The lizard was making moves as if it wanted to attack and bite me if I got to close. It also almost straighten it's legs and that made it look a little like his great ancestors.

I can only guess it was a young male because males sand lizards can be quite agressive. They are known from quite seriously looking fights in mating season.

Anyway, I've never before seen anything like that. I wonder if any of you seen such behavior of this quite common lizards?

Great shot ! There are lots of lizards where I live, but I have never seen one of them reacting like this one did. He must have been really angry with you :-) This is an excellent shot, with nice sharp details, beautiful natural colors, andexcellent POV and composition. Your timing was perfect ! Very well done !

Hello Monika,
Good quality picture as always. May be sand lizards have personality and this on happen to be a bit aggressive or just territorial in spring time mating season. Excellent POV and composition. TFS

Hi Monika,
Looks like you both took each other by surprise :-) I've never seen one of these, i'm starting to think I lead a sheltered life :-) An interesting post, great note and a great shot. I like the shallow DOF, it adds a lot of depth to the image. Great exposure, framing, detail and natural colours, perfect eye contact. Great post!

Hi Monika,
A nice shot here. I like the shallow DOF. Sharp and detail on the head with a nice fall off in detail. He is striking a fierce pose as a defense method. You caught it perfectly.

Hi Monika, this is certainly a gutsy little fellow. I have never had this with a common lizard only Iguanas. I wonder if they feel threatened by the camera. Anway great shot, his agression certainly made a good photo. Good technically and well composed. TFS.

swietne uchwycone! Pozdrawiam Ewa!!

Hi Monika
Is this title referring to you or to the lizard (chuckle)? I am sure you forgave him as he did not know of any better, didn't you?
You have an excellent shot showing extraordinary behaviour from this little brave heart. The composition is stunning with this vertical posting and I like how that one eye seems to show the focus of his aggression. The colours are natural, the details are superb (right down to his tonsils) showing amazing sharpness where it matters, and the exposure was perfectly managed.
Very well done and TFS.

Hi Monkia

Excellent shot. Great POV. Very good exposure. Nice compo. Super work. Well done. :-)

Hello Monika!
I love the shots that showing the aggression of the reptiles, mammals etc. Very exciting to me! So this one is perfect on behalf of what I mentioned above. Really natural behaviour and I don't think you catch a scene like this one especially looking to lizards! Hey, you don't mention about feelings exactly! ok, you were surprised but were you scared a little bit? Were you enough close to the agressive fellow for scaring?
Great shot, I admired you catching this one and I appreciated your posting really!

wonderful ,very very wonderful ................................

Hello Thistle,
You have made anger the lizard. Threatening pose, that is only a simple pose that it does to intimidate to us. The details of the head are good, personally I had preferred more depth of focus, but it is not absolutely negative because not distract as much the caught moment.
Best regards

The DOF was a good choice for this subject as it emphasizes the face and it's expression. The lighting is also nice. Well done Monika. :)

Brilliant shot wonderful title Monika. Composition is perfect, DOF is effective in that the image has depth, focus and sharpness is good. The pose of the Lizard makes this special of course. Very nice work.

Hi Monika!

Just amazing! Looks like your place is crowded with fantastic reptiles... This one is superb. What a pose! Real fighter. Perfect moment, lots of feelings. Great post my friend!
And about story - animals are amazing sometimes. Last time I was attacked by Coot :-) It was obvious, because I was taking pictures of her/his children and she/he defended them. Attack was very fast and loud, very brave bird I must say.

Salut Monika
