Tiger's Whiskers
(Black Bat Flower, Cat's Whiskers, Devil Flower)
Tacca chantrieri

Tacca chantrieri, called the devil flower, no doubt, from the malevolent way the eyes in the bloom seem to be following your every move! It grows to about 2ft. in height with flowers complete with filaments or whiskers 12in. long forming a flowing forked tail. Tacca chantrieri is native to Southeast Asia. The purple-black flower looks somewhat like a flying bat, a sinister face or a mean cat with lots of whiskers. Bat Plant usually blooms in late summer and early fall.

This photo was taken at the Butterfly Sanctuary in Penang.

Hello Manyee,
What a fascinating and beautiful flower! Great sharpness and lovely colours. Very nice to see its sharp leaves beyond the whiskers! I like the contrasting leaves (Bamboo?) in the backround too. Excellent composition.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Manyee,

I have never seen this before. I like it; it is quite unusual. You have captured it very nicely, with good detail on the flower. I like the composition if the picture as well. Well done.

Hi ManYee,
What a wonderful flower. I've never seen it before. I love the dark purple color and how the color slowly tranfers to an almost white. The roots that do look like whiskers are very stunning.
Superb exposure and sharpness. Looks like you used the flash perfectly.
TFS,
Niek
