[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On Swiss National Day I went looking for a special shot... I found it in my Bluebell Jungle.

In Calgary the fathomless wisdom of the Alderpersons allows for the definition of flowers as weeds. Even though farmers only retire in the City, rather than cultivate fields and grow crops, there are still by-laws on the books that make certain FLOWERS flora-non-grata...

Personally I believe in a multi-floral jungle, where it is every flora for itself, and Nature for all...
And the Shaman will sort things!

What say you?

PS If you can identify this Shaman, I am interested to hear from you. If no answers are received I shall attempt to reveal who is wearing thin crown on Drie Koningen

PS2 I have zoomed in so folks can take a closer look, and perhaps identify the flower/plant.

PS3 Here is the definitive photo by Peter Stoeckl that shows what we have here... Yes a peony or paeony (Paeonia)!

From Italy we have this pure flower; from France one with a beetle; finally from Germany another great shot, also with a visitor. Then in Turkey we see, courtesy of Ori, a Paeonia withmaniana

Indeed my photo is of the "seedbox" or fruit of a peony which had already lost its petals, but was still "bearded".

Hello Jay.
This is an interesting plant, but I have no idea about the ID. I have all I can handle identifying the bugs ;)
Even though your crop has introduced a bit of noise, a great help in the possible ID :)

Strange looking things growing in Calgary, Sorry can't help you with ID. Crop did make it a bit noisy but it is a good capture of an unusual plant.

Hi Jay,
It is a good shot as the main center is not very well lit so it is prefered spot metering, a good DOF that brought most of it in focus, I do appreciate your choice.

quite an unusual plant you have presented here, slightly noisy from tight cropping but with enough details to recognize - but sorry I do not recognize it because never have seen anything like it. Looking forward to see the solution - Drie Koningen is near!

It's a Peony gone to seed. I'm a huge gardener ....ha ha ha

This appears to be a peony.....I think.
I recognize the spent petals, and the
"organs" in the center of the shot.
I liked the BG, not too "noisy" for my
eclectic taste, but adds instead, to the
spent petals, and the central remaining structures, all in a state of "disarray".
Nicely done!!
