Wattled Plover (Vanellus senagallus) Lelkiewiet

This post is especially for you, Callie and Japie – I know you are fond of “mug shots” of birds.

This is a fairly large long-legged bird with a length of about 35cm. The body is greyish brown being darker on the belly. Has a white fore-crown and streaked neck. Legs and feet are greenish yellow. The bill is bright yellow with a black tip. The lappets and eye-rings are yellow with forehead wattle red to orange. The iris is lemon yellow.

Distribution: Africa South of the Sahara.

Habitat: Grassveld along streams and vleis, grassy slopes and exposed areas around lakes and pans.

Habits: Solitary or in pairs. Walks slowly and deliberately while foraging and squats when threatened. Active at night.

Food: Insects and grass seeds.

Amazing shot Ben. It is so clear - his beak and feathers so real. Even looks like he has eyelashes too. Very well done.

This is one superbe mugshot, showing the lapwing in all his glory, well done! The whites are especially well exposed, something I often get blown out!

This mugshot is stunning and I really like this POV. The BG does a great job of supporting this image and the sharpness is great, but most of all - I love the eye!
