European Mantis - Mantis religiosa (Linnaeus, 1758)
Family: Mantidae
Order: Mantodea

There's so much posted about mantises here so instead, I'll tell you more about the shot.

Actually I have never seen mantis in Poland, always it was somewhere south. This one comes from my 2nd trip to Bulgaria.

We came to a very special area called Rusenski Lom, which is a National Park protecting a kanyon with 40 old Byzantine rock churches and hermit cells curved in the kanion walls in mediaeval times. Splending place indeed, I'll have to post some pics from there some time.

That particular day we have visited the village Cerven. There is an isolated limestone hill (almost impossible to access) on which a Byzantine fortress and city existed, now in complete ruins of course (see workshop).

It was quite hard to climb up the hill and it was very deserted, just some stones, harsh xerophytes, cicadas and mantises.

This one looked like pretendind to play the grass harp and not waiting for a prey to kill...

See you in two days - work trip again... not really a fun in November here ;-)

Nice close-up Michal!

Exposure is excellent, but focus seems a little bit soft. However you caught a beautiful light, creating a nice "rimlight" on the branch and translucent light on the front legs. DOF is excellent to concentrate attention on the insect.
Good work and TFS

Excellent shot Michal! Great colors and sharpness. Nice light passing through the legs. Good DOF and POV. Thanks for sharing!
