[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
"DİŞLİ GEYİK" Fotoğrafa bakınca dudak kenarlarından sarkan dişleri göreceksiniz. Aslında adı bu değil; Tragulus kanchil - Cüce Miskgeyiği [TR], Lesser Mouse-deer [EN]. Sadece bir tavşan boyutunda. Erginlerin boyu ancak 45 cm kadar gelirken; ağırlıkları 2 kg kadardır. Güneydoğu Asya’da Çin’in güneyinden Endonezya’ya kadar geniş dağılım gösterir. Bilimsel adındaki "tragos", Eski Yunanca (Grekçe)'da "keçi", "-ulus" ise küçültme eki; yani "küçük keçi, keçicik" anlamında. "kançil" ise Malaya Yarımadası'ndaki yöresel adı. Hem cüce geyiklerin toplandığı Miskeyikleri (TRAGULIDAE) ailesinin hem de Çifttoynaklılar (ARTIODACTYLA)'ın en küçük türüdür.
Boynuz yerine diş taşıyan Miskgeyikleri, biri Afrika’nın, diğer dokuzu Güney Asya'nın tropikal ormanlarında yaşayan geyiklere (Cervidae) akraba olan Çifttoynaklı grubudur. Tavşan boyutunda veya az daha büyük olan bu hayvanlar, Gevişgetirenler (RUMINANTIA) alttakımının en ilksel dalını oluşturur. Çok ürkek olan bu geyikler, iyi saklanırlar. Geceleyin faal olup; bitkisel beslenirler. Yaşadıkları bölgeleri, kendi aralarında müdafaa ederler; idrar, dışkı ve çenelerindeki koku bezinin salgısıyla işaretlerler. Ailenin 10 türünün ikisinde görülen ilginç bir üreme davranışı vardır; doğum yapan dişi, birkaç saat sonra tekrar çiftleşir ve böylece neredeyse bütün hayatını gebe olarak geçirir.
