Pearl Crescent
Phyciodes tharos

June is a great time for wildflowers, insects and wildlife here in Alberta. Nature comes to life very quickly during the short summer.

The Pearl Crescent grows up to 30 cm and are found in the southern half of Alberta.

A tiny butterfly that enjoys perching on flowers with their wings open to the warmth of the sun.

Similar to a Monarch Butterfly they love to glide, not so common for other butterflies.

There is a northern species (P. selenis) but the two are very hard to tell apart, their range is the best way to distinguish.

Hello Janice,
Beautiful photograph of this Pearl. I like its composition as well as blurred BG. Well details and nice attractive color. Good work....
Thanks for sharing,

Hello Janice
Good photo, being hand held and considering the low shutter speed.
Similar species are common in Mexico too.

TFS & regards

nice composition and amazing colors.

Hello Janice

Excellent macro of this butterfly over its flower, with fine POV showing its
beautiful patterns and color tones, great focus, sharpness, details, and contrast, TFS

Hi Janice,
This is very beautiful butterfly, similar to fritillary here. You nicely captured it from dorsal surface. Focus, composition and colors very beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes.

Hi Janice,
an attractively well describing and inviting capture of a pretty Canadian butterfly of the Cresecents.
I like the way you have shown it in such a fragile way, almost merging with the blossom.
The Crescents might be rather hard to tell apart.
This one also seems to resemble Phyciodes pulchella, the Field Crescent that might also fly in your area.
Thank you! With best regards,
