Other common names: Purple Swamphen, Purple Gallinule

Description: Native bird 51 cm., males 1050 g., females 850 g., deep almost iridescent indigo blue. The back and wings black with a greenish gloss, undertail coverts are pure white, scarlet bill, orange-red legs.

Where to find: Abundant throughout New Zealand, in rough damp pasture near wetlands. Also found in suitable habitat in Europe, Asia, Africa, India and Australia.

The Purple Swamphen is With such a wide spread it is not surprising that there are 13 subspecies. The subspecies found in Europe is the nominate. This rail is large and ponderous as it moves around the wetlands it inhabits. It is mainly vegetarian and it uses its bill to dig out stems, etc. which it then holds in its feet while it eats.

This is one of those shots that fit into the WOW! catagory. They are reserved for great shots that the moment you see them, that is the first word you say. This one makes my list. You see alot of great reflection shots, but this one is perfect! The exposure on the reflection is as good as your subject. AWSOME!

It's a wonderful bird and the sharpness of the photo is very high. The reflection is perfect.
