This is my first photo taken with flash and first photo of moth in flight I posted on TN.

I must say I don't use flash almost at all.
Exception are only the photos taken in dark forest where using flash is the only way to get good shot.
However I don't entirely like the results cause many times the photos were a bit overexposed and it was quite impossible to take good macro shot.

Some days ago I decided to take a photo of moth feeding at the evening in my garden.

Of course I had to use the flash, but again the photos had hot places - usually wings of the moth.
So I make a kind of filter - my camera's got a built-in flash so I've just covered it with a piece of thick white paper. It was just an experiment but the results are much better than without the 'filter'(though still not perfect).

As for the photo.

There was plenty of moths at the part of garden where Scarlet Beebalms bloom - it must be one of their favourite flowers.
Most of the night butterflies were feeding in flight, waving their wings very fast, so I thought it would be quite hard to take a photo on which the moth wouldn't be blurred.
I decided to use auto mode cause, still, I'm not very good in manual settings and this was the safest way ;)

This is the best shot I have. I realize it's not perfect, but I'm happy with the results cause they're much better than I thought they would be.

PS. I don't know the ID of the moth. I realize the photo isn't clear enough to be sure of it, but if any of you has an idea what species could it be, please let me know.

Yeah, this is really good shot Monika! Flash made amazing effect with black BG and colorfull main objects. And moth captured in flight - congratulations! As always very good note, too. I hope you'll be lucky enough to capture bigger moths [hummingbird-like] in late August.

*POV:5, Great.

*DOF:4, Almost perfect but DOF could have been a little wider.

*Composition:5, The flying Moth on the left, heading for the flowers on the right ... perfect for me.

*Details:4, Details are amazingly sharp for such a difficult picture.

*Exposure:4, Very good but the legs are a wee bit hot.

*Colors:4, All colors look very natural and the black of the BG is just perfect.

*Note:5, You notes are always very informative and this one forms no exception. Thanks!

*X-factor:5, For me this is this is one of the first times I saw a flying Moth in such a great atmosphere.

Scale 1-5, 5 is the best.

Hello Monika,

In case you missed the recent chit-chat on the forum: since the day before yesterday I have a new way of writing critiques and awarding points. I hope you like my new way of writing critiques. If you don't, just tell me.

What a fantastic shot! I am just not quick enough and skilled enough to make such photos. I am glad you are, so you are able to post such fantastic pics. TFS!

Great shot Monika, really well done on the flash. It is not without some small imperfections but that is forgiven by the sheer creativeness of the image. Hoping to see more of this type of thing, kind regards, Rob

Nice work Monika,
Well done with the flash.
I like your composition, a hard capture considering you have a moving target.

Excellent shot Monika! Very well done for capturing this moment. The use of the flash to make a black BG really gives emphasis to the two areas of interest. The sharpness of the moth is incredible for what is a diffiult shot at the best of times.

Excellent work, well done.

Hello Monika,
interesting shot and perfect timing. Great shot. Well done.

Monika, such quick action on your part - excellent capture to catch the moth so well, and showing no wing movement at all. And doesn't it contrast so well against the BG. Well done, I'm impressed. And such informative note as usual too. Good job!

What an amazing shot, Monika.

Your technique worked well, and is quite innovative.

Wow! You took this photo at just the right moment, Monika! Love it! Perfect compostion too.

Hi Monica.
Great try, very hard to obtain.

Hi Monika, this is a great shot, don't think I've seen one of a moth flying before (apart from the hummingbird hawkmoth that is). This is well caught indeed, nice and sharp and well set against the dark BG. It is a Silver Y moth, these are day fliers and I get lots of them in my garden all through the summer. If you look on the wings you can clearly see the pale Y shape from which it gets its name. Well done, its an excellent capture :)

Great shot Monika, your always thinking about different ways to create your images which is a refreshing thing on TN. I am tiring of the bog-standard macro images which fill the gallery's of TN, maybe they are technically "perfect" but not very creative. Iv dozens of static butterfly pics but can't be bothered to post them. Well maybe Il post one now, He He. Anyhow excellent in-flight shot with great use of flash, I must try something like this soon. 7/10 Well done.

Hello Monika,
This is very artistic and one of the best in-flight insect shots I've seen + butterflies and moths are difficult to get because of their eratic flight pattern.
The composition is excellent.
Well done!

Bonjour Monica, superbe shot with a good timing and vivid colors TFS Didier.

Superb capture Monika!
I know how difficult it is using flash with moths.
I tried all evening once to photograph Burnished Brass Moths (which look like shining brass metal) on a plant near our kitchen. No good shots at all.
This is great though.
Well done.

Very interesting approach Monika. How did you focus on the moth? It is something differetn and I like it. Well done.

Hi Monika, I have no time to write a decent comment. I give to you the well deserved smily.

Weekend thought:
The most beautiful and profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of the mystical.
It is the sower of all true science.
He to whom this emotion is a stranger,
who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead.
To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists,
manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty
which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their primitive forms,
this knowledge, this feeling, is at the centre of true religiousness.

Thank you for sharing pictures and notes and for the enjoyment which they give to me.

wow what a shot Monika
I have lots of Moth in my yard too, I'll try your technique next time. how do you able to focus on a moving Moth at night? did you just focus on the flower and wait for the moth?

Its absolutely magnificent. Did you ever consider selling your photos to stock photography libraries? You have so much talent, I really believe your work should be published.

S U P E R B !!!

Another action in the black, I really like your photos here, you're doing great on this site, Monika !
Excellent shot !

Congratulation, what fantastic colours!
You do always fantastic shot!

Well caught moment. Good background and composition.

Excellent capture magnifique mouvement
Very good composition, nice colour.

Great artistic composition. The BG is realy nice. I rely like color and details.

Beautiful Portfolio

Thanks Monika

Hi Monika.
Not using the flash it's good for me too but I'm not so good to photos like this.
Your job is excellent using or not the flash.
The black BG give to the colous more life.
The flowers seems that waiting for the moth.
Another title for your photo
