A giant lantern bug (Pyrops candelaria) from the plant hopper family Fulgoridae, within the Order Hemiptera. These lantern bugs are sap feeders from longan and lychee trees, among others. Its long, needle shaped mouth-piece is used to pierce tree bark to reach the sap. They are large, this one was around 6cm (2.5in) in length.
We found this one in the car park at the Sepilok Orang-utan sanctuary in Sabah (Borneo), though they are also distributed through lowland broadleaf rainforests of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Malaysian peninsula.

From Wikipedia:
The family Fulgoridae is a large group of hemipteran insects, especially abundant and diverse in the tropics, containing over 125 genera worldwide. They are mostly of moderate to large size, many with a superficial resemblance to Lepidoptera due to their brilliant and varied coloration. Various genera and species (especially the genera Fulgora and Pyrops) are sometimes referred to as lantern flies, though they do not emit light.

The head of some species is produced into a hollow process, resembling a snout, which is sometimes inflated and nearly as large as the body of the insect, sometimes elongated, narrow and apically upturned. It was believed, mainly on the authority of Maria Sibylla Merian, that this process, the so-called lantern, was luminous at night. Linnaeus adopted the statement without question and coined a number of specific names, such as laternaria, phosphorea and candelaria to illustrate the supposed fact, and thus aided in promoting a belief which centuries of observations have failed to confirm.

Hello Chris,
Truly amazing insect. I like the light and exposure. On the other hand I think that shallower DOF would help to isolate it from the distracting twigs and leaves in the background. Anyway a very nice shot.
Best greetings and TFS!

Hello Chris,

Hi Chris,
it's great to see you still are here after all these years.
This is a high quality close-up picture of this beautiful insect.
The picture is well exposed and the colours are nice and natural.
Good sharpness with almost perfect DOF, the whole insect is in good focus and still stand out well from the BG.
Very fine work, old friend.
