In an ideal photo, the woodpecker would be in a more natural environment, but, so far, this is the best I could get. I took the shot late in the afternoon; the sun was behind the bird.

Colaptes campestris

In Portuguese, pica-pau-do-campo; in English, campo flicker.

The Woodpeckers are a large family of similarly designed birds found in forested areas around the globe. The have specially evolved to deal with chiseling wood, including "shock-absorber" head musculature, extremely long tongues, and stiff tail feathers helping them perch upright on trees. Woodpeckers are often a "core species" of the woodland avifauna [except in two major areas that don't have any woodpeckers: Australasia and Madagascar].

Woodpeckers come in a great variety of shapes and colors. One group are the flickers which specialize in feeding on the ground, often focussing on ants. The Campo Flicker (above) of southern South America is such a species and a very striking bird to boot. Yet even it has the stiffly pointed specialized tail feathers that held woodpeckers perch vertically on tree trunks.

Hi Livio,

You're right about the unnatural environment. Still this is a good capture. The warm afternoonlight is great and it lits the bird perfectly. Details are good enough. Well done & TFS!

Hi Livio,
Great light on the woodpecker showing off his golden colors. He has quite unusual feather details. Good POV, nice and sharp too. Well done.

Ola Livios,
Mais uma linda foto que tu nos apresentas.

Excelente captura Lívio.
Apesar de já ter visto, dificilmente consigo focá-lo para uma foto.
Nitidez da plumagem fantástica.

Hi Livio!
Not natural environment but at least woodpecker is very good visible on this wire ;-) Must be very pretty bird! Good composition and quality. Our Polish woodpeckers are always hidden between trees and almost impossible to capture ;-)

Hi Livio,
A great compo in a different POV.
I like the effect of light here.

Great shot Livio! I like this POV..

Hello Livio!
