[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
For some reason I'd forgotten to post an image of this very special flower - the Snake's Head Fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris). In late April my wife and I made a round trip of around 200 miles to see this species in bloom. It was definitely worth the effort as in one large water meadow we saw literally tens of thousands of these wonderful flowers - a breathtaking sight!

The plant is a member of the Lily family, and is almost indistinguishable from the grass it grows amongst when not in bloom. It is a specialist of water meadows and will not tolerate modern agricultural methods. In the UK, the sections of the River Thames that flow through Wiltshire and Oxfordshire are the best areas to see it (the meadow we saw held around 80% of the total UK population).

This shot was taken in late afternoon when the sun was less intense, and a reflector was used to light the shaded side of the flower. The resulting image has been lightly cropped, resized and sharpened.

If you want to see this flower there is a website for Cricklade North Meadow national nature reserve here.

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com
