Elfin Saddle (Helvella crispa). I saw a group of these fungi when I was driving along a road near to the centre of Bournemouth. So the next day I went back to the area with my camera equipment and took some shots. There were a good number of them under a beech tree (around 20) in different stages of growth. This is a young specimen and the stalk has not extended fully as yet.

It is a fairly common species and although edible it is not considered worthwhile by most people - so if you find them it's best to leave them where they are and just enjoy the sight of the strange, twisted fruiting bodies.

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com

Hi Vinny,
Indeed considered edible till now. Yet there are neurotoxins in it. There are plenty of beter and safer species.
Nice shot. Clear details in the whites.
