Hello my Friends!
Today another very "fresh" picture, taken just 2 days ago in Swietokrzyski National Park in Szklana Huta village, Swietokrzyskie Mts.

This is a male of an Alpine Newt (Mesotriton alpestris) (Laurenti, 1768). This specimen is in its "terrestrial" body colouration.

I have to say that when I planned to visit Swietokrzyskie Mts. (these mountains are the smallest in Poland and Central Europe, but they are also very old and were formed during the Caledonian orogeny of the Silurian period) I knew that 3 species of newts are known from this area. They are: Triturus cristatus, Lissotriton vulgaris and this one. And the rarest in this area is an Alpine Newt! And during 2 days I saw only this species!!! :>

The Alpine Newt is known in Poland mainly from southern part of country. In Swietokrzyskie Mountains this species has isolated, rather old population restricted to very small area.
Except Poland it can be found in other countries of Central Europe and mountainous Southern Europe.
It inhabits forests with good access to water in hilly to mountainous regions. Except mating season (early spring - in fresh water) it is a terrestrial creature.

As this is my first picture of amphibian taken this year, I would like to dedicate it to our two friends and specialists in herpetology: Bayram (boreocyprensis) and Mehmet (matatur) :>

If you are interesting in other species of amphibians and reptiles known from Poland - please feel free to look here :>

As always I would be very grateful for your comments and critiques! :>

Hello Radomir
Asuperb capture of a newt and great dedication to tha two famous scientists in Turkish herpetology. TFS. Regards,

Hello Radomir,
What a cute attitude has this Alpine newt. I'm used to see some of them too, but I don't know if it is the same species. Your picture is excellent in composition and sharpness. Not easy to take pictures of these amphibians in the sun.
Thanks also for your note.
Bonne journée

Czesc Radek!

Fantastyczne zdjecie! Szczegoly i wzory na skorze zwierzaka po prostu rewelacyjne. Swietna tez kompozycja i czyste tlo. Notka jak zawsze bardzo ciekawa. Masz szczescie :-) Ja jakos nie moge ustrzelic zadnego ogoniastego plaza, marze o salamandrze, ale nigdy nie widzialem na zywo.

Alpine Newt has very subtle shades of colours on its body, Radomir, as you image shows so very graphically.
This dark newt is a new subject for me.
It is a wonderful capture and your note comes in handy to know more about this newt.
Thanks and regards.

Witaj, Radomirze!
Znowu mnie zaskakujesz, salamandry to ja widzialem, ale zwykle w "standartowej", pomaranczowej barwie, natomiast ta odmiana jest dla mnie czymms calkowicie nowym! Ile to jeszcze nowych doznan przede mna!
A fotka wspaniala, szczegolnie faktura jej skory!

Hi Radomir,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful looking Newt with lovely colours and details on its body. Great use of flash lighting and you have it in a fabulous pose here among the woods. A worthy dedication too for two of our finest herpetology experts. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Hi Radomir,
this is a top quality presentation of the Alpine Newt. Never managed to get a reasonably sharp and well shaped image from one of those lovely clumsy black fellows - can't do without flash. Well made!
With thanks, and best regards,

Hi Radomir.
What an amazing creature (I have never seen this species anywhere) and terrific as usual quality of the image. I like pictured scene at whole. It is so impressive. Old wood as a BG is so suitable for this animal. DOF, detail and sharpness are ultimate and lighting is so impressive too. Bravo. Well done.
