[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Camouflage or Mimicry is adapting to look like something else.
Mimicry is important: it keeps its owner alive. Much mimicry is based in color and visual pattern.

Tropical Greenstreak (Cyanophrys herodotus)

Wing span: 7/8 - 1 1/8 inches (2.2 - 2.9 cm).

Identification: Hindwing tailed. Upperside blue; face and underside green. Hindwing with only 1 red-brown spot at lower outer margin.

Life history: Females lay eggs singly on flowers and flower stalks of host plants. Caterpillars feed on leaves and flowers.

Flight: Late May-late October in South Texas, throughout the year in Central America and Mexico.

Caterpillar hosts: Various shrubs and trees in Central America and Mexico including Lantana camara, Cornutia grandifolia, Clerodendron paniculatum (Verbenaceae); Lithraea brasiliensis, Schinus molle, Mangifera indica (Anacardiaceae); and Mikania (Asteraceae).

Adult food: Flower nectar.

Habitat: Seasonally dry and wet tropical forests and neighboring edges.

Range: Brazil north through Central and South America to Sinaloa and Tamaulipas in Mexico. Rare stray to South Texas.

Intéressant cet étonnant papillon qui se confond dans le feuillage ! Joile photo bien composée.
Well done Ricardo !

Brilliant! You did an exceptional job in capturing him in his natural environment to show us his camoflague ability. Very well done Ricardo. Nice contribution.

How well he blends in. I'd like to see the blue upperside of the wings, do you have a picture? Great shot Ricardo, and good note too.

Ricardo, This is a most excellent depiction of camouflage found in nature. Do I understand correctly that this specie actually changes its colors similar to say a chameleon? Great post!

wauw Ricardo,
Yes this is camouflage, very nice capture, from this camouflage butterfly, good colours, great dof and a exelent note, very good job

Almost a perfect match Ricardo, the greens are beautifully seen. the leaf mimicry seems a universal theme in the insect world and the butterfly are better than most.
the image is very nicely sharp front to back, even the shadow from the leaf helps to show how it blends in with the BG.

This guy is a master at camouflage. The sharpness and DOF is great, and I like the composition too. I have never seen this butterfly before. Thanks for posting
