Toatoa.
Family. Phyllocladaceae.
Species Phyllocladaceae alpinus
Common Name Mountain Toatoa.
What we have here is he male strobili of the Mountain Toatoa.
It is a evergreen shrub or tree growing from 2.5mtrs to 9 mtrs. tall.
The leaves are not leaves but modified stems called phylloclades they work like leaves.
he red male strobili are in clusters of 2 to 6 and are about 2mm long.and occur in November December.
Female flowers are insignificant on the edges of the phylloclades occur in spring.
found in sub alpine forests of both of our islands. |
