A Yellow Eyed Penguin returns from a fishing trip to take over nest duty and feed the chicks. Unlike other penguins, Yellow Eyed are solitary so have less of a chance of avoiding the predators lurking offshore.

Sharks, seals, sealions and, occasionally, orca are all marine predators of penguins. Leopard seals, usually residents of the Antarctic region, are specialist penguin predators and are occasionally seen as far north as the North Island. NZ sealions occasionally dine on penguins, but fur seals rarely do so. Sharks kill an unknown number of mainly young penguins, but also inflict injuries on others. Also regularly inflicting injuries on yellow-eyed penguins are barracouta who bite at the feet of the penguins, causing injuries that in themselves are not fatal but then often become infected.

I quite liked the reflection and the division of the frame by the broken wave.

Taken using 300mm 2.8 + 1.4x converter.

Well seen and well taken. The pose of the penguin is great, it's position in the frame and the reflection. The contrasts in the image have been well handled and the diagonal of the water's edge through the frame adds interest and impact. Excellent!

Did you take this at the Yellow-eyed Penguin lookout? Or were you lucky enough to see this one elsewhere on the peninsula? I'd love to have a shot like this!

Hello James,
A very attractive omposition!
The surf almost touching the bird, that reflects nicely in the wet sand... wonderful!
Simplicity is striking, great details!

Hi James,

A wonderful shot of this wet Penguin. He looks so lonely with only his reflection to keep him company. Excellent composition with the water rolling into shore.

Hello James,
This is a splendid capture of this Penguin all isolated on the beach. I like the diagonal line of the surf and the reflection of the Penguin in the wet sand. Fine details and colours too in this lovely composition.
TFS and regards, Ulla

We saw these penguins when we visited here many years ago. And I believe the viewing area is MUCH better then what they had back then.
Good shot James, and especially the reflection in the wet sand,

Hello James,
What a great image of this penguin coming to shore. The waves chasing him in and that wonderful reflection add to the great composition. Well done James.

This Penguin is like a regally-robed emperor walking home after his "walk" on the sea, James :-)!
Its reflection on the wet beach is certainly the most beautiful component of this picture. In addition, I also like the colour contrasts between the waves and the beach.
Thanks for sharing and regards.

Hi James,
Lovely capture of this yellow eyed penguin. Composition, POV, details and exposure handling are very nice. I liked the reflection of the bird on the wet sand. TFS
Have a nice week,

Hi James
What I like most here is the fact that this guy seems exhausted and that he is so glad to come back home after a hard day work :)! I get this impression form its pose and nonchalant way of walking. I also like this composition but I wish that you could be a little closer to him, just a bit to see clearly its expression :) Well done!

It looks like Venus coming out of the foam... or a spy in mission impossible... great picture, James, really great. I love the silhouette in the sand, the foam close to the penguin and its nobility that you captured. The light is superb and I too like the division of the frame, very nice. Thanks,

Hi James,

I like the shot for those elements you mention too. It is quite nice. I love the white edge of the surf edge and the contrasting textures of water and sand.

Evelynn : )

Hi James,
I like the birds reflection and overall composition, with the penguin just ahead of the waters edge on the diagonal.
Good details, color, POV, and exposed well.
