The Great Aussie Salute

I’m back from my holiday in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia – had a great time with my daughter and we wished we’d stayed longer. We did lots of shopping, ate out a lot, visited friends, took plenty of photos of the amazing Federation Square, and also did a tour up the Yarra Valley to a few wineries.

If you are interested in seeing some of the photos I suggest you look at my postings in TrekLens over the next few weeks.

I’m sorry but I didn’t take many nature shots: one fly, and this is it on a poppy at the Moet et Chandon Winery; a couple of magpies, some sparrows, and a black and white bird that was too fast for my camera. We did hear other birds, but never saw them.

If you haven’t heard of the Great Aussie Salute, it is something that you will soon learn once you arrive in Australia. Especially in summertime!

Flies in Australia have inspired a new style of body language. Known as the "Australian Salute", Australians have turned flicking away a fly into an art form.

Farmers use the salute to convey a regal presence, almost as if they are a billionaire waving his hands to stop his staff bothering him. So dignified does it look, some farmers even salute when flies aren't even bothering them.

On the beach, ladies may salute with a flick of the fingers. This can draw a male's attention to the sensuous nature of her hands.

In fact, one of Australia's proudest moments occurred in 1954 when the Queen first visited Australia. Menaced by flies, she adopted the salute and so won great applause at home and abroad. Onlookers felt that after years of dealing with convict taunts, the Queen's acceptance of a local custom proved that Australia had finally come of age.

PS : I start my second period of holydays, for the first I was ill and for this second I make concret for my house, after perhaps few days in mountain ;-)

Una bella composición Janice con excelente nitidez con la totalidad de los objetos en foco.
Bellos colores y adecuado contraste con el fondo, con el detalle de los insectos, pero también de la sombra tan agradable.
Saludos... Ricardo

A beautiful composition Janice with excellent clarity with the entirety of the objects in focus.
Pretty colors and appropriate contrast with the backdrop, with the detail of the insects, but also of the shade so pleasant.
Greetings... Ricardo
