The Kapok (Cochlospermum gillivraei) is an Australian deciduous tree confined to the tropical north of Queensland and the Northern Territory in Australia. They can grow to 12m but most are much smaller. The large yellow flowers, with 5 petals to 4 cm long, and numerous stamens, are followed by large brown capsules (6-9.5 cm long), which split open to reveal 2 contrasting layers and numerous seeds covered by long hairs. The leaves are deeply lobed with 5-7egg-shaped or lance-shaped lobes, the lobes dark green and smooth, 5-7 cm x 8-10 cm. Flowering occurs from August to October when the tree is leafless. Seeds are borne in egg-shaped capsules, about 8 cm long, which split open when ripe to release black seeds embedded in a cotton-like fibre.

They are commonly found growing on dry rocky hill slopes, open forests and dry vine scrubs. In coastal areas it is often prominent on rocky ridges and granite headlands

Cochlospermum is a genus of about 20 species with four occurring in Australia. The Australian species are plants of the tropics and all tend to lose their leaves during the dry season.

This one was taken on the slopes of Mount Marlow north of Townsville. It was shot in the mid afternoon in full sun, but how could resist such a showy flower against such beautiful spring sky.

hi chris,
beautiful flowers well composed against that glorious blue sky, in good lighitng conditiions. tfs.

I wonder if this is a different species to the ones I've seen.
I remember on Niue Island,Kapok was a massive forest tree, with spikes on the trunk.
It had the pods with the black seeds and wool like kapok you mention, but I don't remember the flowers. Mind you, the trees were big, perhaps 20 metres or more.

Ah, the beautiful harbingers of spring in your country, Chris!
The pair of them, crisp and fresh, glow against the blue sky.
Thanks for sharing the image and best regards.

Hello Chris, my neighbour,
The lighting and colours are gorgeous in this image. Beautiful sharp capture of Kapok flowers against a fantastic deep blue sky in a great composition.
A real beaut and TFS it!

Hi Chris,
I hope everything is well.
a beautiful picture with amazing colours, specially for a Swede ;-)
I like the diagonal of flower and the details are very good.
Pity it's a bit dark under the flower but I think you have to deal with quite hard light, maybe a small fill-in flash had help, anyway it a beautiful picture.
Well done, my friend.

A great macro-shot for very beautiful flowers. Sharp focus, lighting, POV wonderful, but also blue sky perfectly contrasted their yellow. Great work indeed. Thanks for sharing, well done, Chris.

Hi Chris again,
When I saw this image in thumbnail view, the title immediately caught my attention, because in Hungarian "kapok" means "I get". :) Beautiful photo, awesome contrast between the bright flowers and the dark blue sky, excellent POV, great exposure - simply a shot to be proud of. Bravo. AQnd of course, tfs.
Best regardes, László
