This is a Common Crow (Euploea core), a member of the Nymphalidae family. In Australia it is found throughout the tropical north to about 300km inland. This species is also widely distributed through New Guinea, Indonesia, South-east Asia, Sri Lank and India.
It is a large butterfly with a wingspan of 72mm. They have a sailing flight and don’t usually venture more than a few metres off the ground. Open woodland is the preferred habitat, but they can be in a variety of habitats including gardens and gallery rainforest. Several generations are produced each year.
This one was captured in Townsville Common, a large nature reserve on the northern outskirts of town.

Hi Chris,
What a beautiful capture and specie. I like these tones of colors that fit together. The butterfly is well detailed and exposed and you chose nice composition. I wonder what it could be drinking form this dead plant... Thanks,

Very interesting. Our common crows are birds and they're all black. Anyway, this is a good shot. Fine point of view and composition. Gary

Chris, this is one of the best Common Crow shots ever published on TN.
The details and colours in this picture are really outstanding.
The ambient light available to you was very good and you made the best possible use of it in shooting this close-up picture.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Chris.
It is clear the butterfly and dry flower are wonderful but I am impressed most of all with fine and harmonic colour palette. Colouration of all pictured objects including BG is identical and pleasant at highest range. Superb derails of the butterfly and smoothness of the BG. DOF is really precise and framing of the shot is spot on too. Thanks for sharing and best wishes.

Hello Chris,

Splendid capture of this butterfly. Excellent composition and sharpness. Excellent exposure. Superb colour tones.

Hola Chris, excelente macro, con acertada exposición, buena definición y detalle. Tonos de color atractivos y fondo limpio y bien desenfocado.
Un saludo

Sorry, I think I spend a lot of time on TN but I still miss sooo much!! This is a superb capture of the Common Crow! I love its pose on the dead flower and the light and the colours are so beautiful. A lovely plain and matching background too.

Hi Chris,
Soft lighting, warm color tones, shallow DOF, blurred background, focus, sharpness, composition, POV and details look very good. TFS
