[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
There are around 100 species of skink belonging to the genus Ctenotus in Australia and most of them have lots of stripes. This can make identification difficult, especially from areas where more than one species occur. This one was shot on Magnetic Island, a large subtropical island just off the coast of Townsville in northern Queensland. I’m pretty sure this one is the Black-backed Yellow-lined Ctenotus (Ctenotus eutaenius), which has a restricted distribution centred on Townsville and Magnetic Island.
It’s a medium-sized skink with a total length of around 200mm, and is fairly numerous on the island.

Great picture Chris! I like its pose, composition with old trunk and dried leaves. Lizard is very detailed and sharp. Exposition in this hard to capture scene is just right. TFS!

Lizards sacrifice their tails to save their lives. Hence the bright expendable tail is designed to attract the attention of an attacker so that the rest of the creature can escape.
