The Striated Pardalote (Pardalotus striatus) is a small passerine around 10cm (4in) in length. It can be found throughout the Australian continent and has several distinctive races. This is the race melanocephalus and it is the race with the least amount of striations through the head. Other races have a heavily striated crown and cheeks.
This is a male, the females are duller in colour. They can be found in just about any habitat through Australia except tropical rainforest. Some races breed in holes in tree limbs; this race digs a tunnel in soft earth along watercourses and road cuttings. The tunnel can be a metre deep and the nest at the end is lined with bark fibres and grasses. We found this one in open woodland near Eungella Dam about 100km west of Mackay.
