I wanted to show the three types of ice that were formed on my window during a recent cold spell when on average the temperature was -18C... that is during the day... This doesn't include the windchill which
added a further -10...

The ice that was forming on the outermost window of a set of double glass panes appears to have formed as follows
1) initial layer of ice that appeared during a very cold night, which then
2) partially melted in the next day's sunlight,
3) subsequent layer of ice next night ...

The oldest ice is seen here at the top of the photo,
the youngest ice is at the bottom...

What was unexpected < at least to me > is the ice in the transition zone, it appears to be where larger crystals - with amazing patterns - formed.

There are still some other things in this photo which I have not explained... Can you find them?

INTERESTING shot!!
I see what appears to be hoarfrost, then I see the "ferns, fronds, feathers" of the central photo, and finally, at the bottom more hoarfrost, almost like a picture frame!!

I also see a couple of "globules" perhaps from melting/melted water which have then
frozen over again....but they surely add
interest to the total photo!!

What an interesting photo Jay. I know nothing about this frozen life on a window - we don't even have double glazing in NZ.
But I love your ferns. I think they look so real, but cold!!

I like the feathers of the ice crystals. You know, last year we had a cold period in Romania as this one- long period with very low temperatures (-20, -25C) and there were lots of ice flowers on the window, but as we know nature is an art genie, so, no copies are allowed! :) I'm glad for sharing also these explanations and maybe you'll made us an album with different kinds of ice and snowflakes.

The shape and layers of these ice cristals are indeed magnificent and you managed to give them such a lovely presentation.
Your first LP looks great!
I also liked the explanatory note - very good and it comes in handy if one wants to solve the "mistery" of all their shapes. :)
