Black-capped Chickadee
Poecile atricapilla

There are four species of Chickadee, Black-capped, Mountain, Boreal and Chestnut-backed. This species is usually found in deciduous and mixed forests, open woodlands and suburban areas. A smaller bird 4 3/4 to 5 3/4 inches. Their black cap is what gives this species away including their white cheeks, gray back and dull white under-parts. Their wings are edged with white.

Their range is from Alaska, most of Canada and into the US to Northern California. They have the cutest call, it goes Chick-a-dee-dee-dee.

Pairs have 6-8 brown-speckles white eggs in a cup of grass, fur, plant down, feathers or moss placed in a hole in a tree.

I found the above information from the Boreal Songbird Initiative.

Hi Janice,
is this your little Russian chickadee?I like these little birds they are such perky and chipper little birds and cute as a button.Your picture looks to be at the far range of your len's reach,so there is some loss of detail.Nice background and point of view works really well with this shot,I like it. Bob

Hi Janice, I liked this guy. The composition, colour and detail are great. I thought it might be just a tad dark so I've created a workshop to provide you with another option.

Thanks, John

Hi Janice

A lovely shot of this bird - very similar to our tits. I like the way you have isolated the bird from the background.

Hi Janice,
what a cute shot of this sweet little bird, good color and great Dof, good POV. TFS

Thanks for your comments on my photo " The Sky is on Fire " :o)

Interesting markings on this one. I find the head a unique shape, maybe cause the eye can't be seen. Or the heavy brow. This one is also all fluffed up. These gals & guys rarely sit still long enough to shoot one,,, so you did well here. Tfs, Jay

hello Janice a well taken shot of the Chickadee great background and the simple branch and bird is a lovely clean capture with minimal distractions. The white and black feathers also make it a difficult bird to expose for as you need a wide dynamic range. well done tfs rgds Necip.

Pose is right, nice soft background included. The subject is in low light which makes the dark areas difficult to show detail. but otherwise a nice shot. :)

Hello Janice

A lovely portrait of this cute little chickadee. They are such a welcome sight and sound in the dead of winter.Very good DOF and POV ,with good detail .The OOF BG is lovely.TFS

Hello janice !
This is such a cute little bird ! Beautiful details, nice natural colors, great pose of the bird, and a wonderful BG, nicely blurred and with soft colors. Maybe I would have cropped a bit at the top or at the bottom, but it's just my opinion and the picture is wonderful as it is. Very well done !

Hi Janice!
What a cutie, this small fellow looks quite full of life and ready to go, good that you have caught him on this shot, great DOF and focus, soft light and balanced colors!TFS!

Hello Janice,
A fine little fellow!
Nicely captured and presented in this attractive composition...
Good point of view and fine details in the bird!
Pablo -

A very difficult subject in a very good moment. Beautyful background, a little undetailed the subject - but probably, considering also subject's size, this is a rather extreme crop down.

Well done.
