Did you know that gulls or mews* , "海鸥(haiou)" are great dancers?

Gulls are birds in the family Laridae. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae), auks, and skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Most gulls belong to the large genus Larus.

They are typically medium to large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings. They have stout, longish bills, and webbed feet. Gull species range in size from the Little Gull, at 120 g (4.2 oz) and 29 cm (11.5 inches), to the Great Black-backed Gull, at 1.75 kg (3.8 lbs) and 76 cm (30 inches).

Most gulls, particularly Larus species, are ground nesting carnivores, which will take live food or scavenge opportunistically. The live food often includes crabs and small fish. Apart from the kittiwakes, gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea. The large species take up to four years to attain full adult plumage, but two years is typical for small gulls.

Gulls — the larger species in particular — are resourceful and highly-intelligent birds, demonstrating complex methods of communication and a highly-developed social structure. Certain species (e.g. the Herring Gull) have exhibited tool use behaviour. Many species of gull have learned to co-exist successfully with man and have thrived in human habitats. Others rely on kleptoparasitism to get their food.

Two terms are in common usage among gull enthusiasts for subgroupings of the gulls:

*** Large white-headed gulls for the 16 Herring Gull-like species from Great Black-backed Gull to Lesser Black-backed Gull in the taxonomic list below
*** White-winged gulls for the two Arctic-breeding species Iceland Gull and Glaucous Gull
Hybridisation between species of gull occurs quite frequently, although to varying degrees depending on the species involved (see Hybridisation in gulls). The taxonomy of the large white-headed gulls is particularly complicated.

In common usage, members of various gull species are often called sea gulls or seagulls. This name is used by laypeople to refer to a common local species or all gulls in general, and has no fixed taxonomic meaning.

very nice of you to use the word that Shaoqi(qiqiqi) used as a title for her upload.I never knew that gulls are aka "mews" but that is part of what makes TN great,the new things one learns every time one goes online.You have in your photo a nicely balanced composition with good light,POV and mellow subdued colours.Your title is the right one for what we see.Tfs. Hmmmm, I had a policeman pull me over one time, and made ME walk a straight line like this gull.....

Very nice photo.....focussed gull and also a well-focussed BG.....great composition, AND, a great capture-in-action!!

Hi Jay,

so he's not dancing to Swan Lake then? That would be inappropriate ;o) Great shot though, you've caught the Gull in a moment of apparant poise and elegance...not like the ones round my way that swoop and steal ice cream out of your hands...bloody things..;o)

Hi Jay

This one seems to do the balancing act while walking the line in a "D(r)iving Under the Influence" test (ha-ha-ha, gotcha) - aka Mike Hammer.

That side of the line it is a mew and this side of the line it is a gull. Normally a posting showing the hind side of a bird would probably not draw my attention, but this is a special shot showing this bird performing a very interesting manoeuvre. Maybe it has a fear of heights (chuckle).

The positives: Good composition, natural colours, sharp details, and spot-on exposure.
The negatives: The Ocean's horizon drops by 0.5mm to the left. (OK, hold you breath, I am pulling your leg.)

Well spotted and captured with excellent timing. TFS.

It looks like this seagull is a ballerina by the way he is holding out his wings and delicately walking along the rocks. All he needs is a little white Tutu.

Hi Jay.
Excellent pictured scene. In spite of strong sunlight shot is exposed and coloured very well. I like great DOF and perfect sharpness of the image, selection of the POV Pictured place is beautiful. Skillfully done shot and interesting note. See my shot which I'll share soon on this subject.
