Fitofaj (bitkiyiyen) böcekler yeryüzü biyoçeşitliliğinin büyük bir kısmını temsil ederler. Bu sıradışı çeştliliği açiklamaya çalışan hipotezlerin çoğu, bunu küçük boyutlarına, çok çeşitli mikrohabitatlarda özelleşmelerine, kısa nesil verme sürelerine, yeni kaynaklara açık olma ve konak bitki değiştirebilme yeteneklerine dayandırmaktadır. Curculionoidea (Ordo: Coleoptera, Kınkanatlılar) içerisindeki çeşitliliği açıklamada bir anahtar nokta olarak, bitki yapısı içerisinde yer alan bir yumutlama alanının oluşturulmasında rostrum (hortum)’un kullanımıdır. Curculionoid dişilerinde uzun bir rostrumun gelişmiş olması, önceden ergin sahfalar için besin kaynağı dahi olmayan bitki kısımlarında yumurtlama alanlarının oluşturulmasıyla, yeni ve uyumlu bir bölgenin istilasına izin verir. Konak seçiminin evrimi ve türleşme işlemini nasıl etkileyebileceği, bu çeşitliliği anlama açısından önemlidir. Konak ırklarının şekillenmesi konusuna önemli derecede dikkat harcanmakta ve genellikle de simpatrik dağılışlı konak sapmaları üzerine yoğunlaşılmaktadır.

Yaklaşık 180 kadar türden ibaret olan Hortumlu böcek cinsi Larinus Palearktik bölgede, yaklaşık 140 kadar tür ile temsil edilir. 100 kadar tür ile Akdeniz havzasındaki en zengin tür çeşitliliğine sahip cinstir. Larinus onopordi ‘nin kuzeydoğu Anadolu’daki esas konağı Echinops sphaerocephalus’dir, ancak nadir olarak neslini tamamlamak için Echinops orientalis'i de tercih eder. Kışlayan erginleri Mayıs ortasından itibaren konak bitkilerle ilişkili olarak görülür. Yapraklar üzerinde birkaç gün beslendikten sonar, çiftleşirler ve çiçekbaşı üzerinde hortumlarını kullanarak yumurtlama deliği kazır ve yumurtalarını bırakırlar. Erginler ayrıca çiçekbaşı altındaki sap kısmına, dikey delikler açarak da zarar verirler. Erginlerin aktivite süresi yaklaşık 44 günde tamamlanır. Ergin populasyonu Mayıs’ın son haftasında pik seviyesine ulaşır. Çiftleşme aktivitesi süresi, neredeyse ergin aktivitesi süresi kadar olup yaklaşık 37 gündür. Yumurtaların bırakılmasından sonra dişiler yumurtalar üzerine yeşil bir sıvı bırakırlar, bu sıvı kısa sürede kurur, sertleşir ve siyah bir renk alır. Yumurtalar yüzeysel yumurtlanır, o nedenle bu kuruyan salgı açıldığı takdirde yumurtaları görmek olasıdır. Yumurta halinde kalma süresi 33 gündür. Çiçekbaşı içinde yumurtadan çıkma ve larvaların beslenmesi, gelişmeye devam etmesi Eylül ortalarına kadardır. Larval dönem yaklaşık 79 gündür. Temmuz’un üçüncü haftasından itibaren çiçekbaşında pupalar görülür. Bir çiçekbaşında birden fazla larva veya pupa olursa, bu çiçekbaşı anormal şekilli olur. Pupa süresi 51 gündür. Yeni nesil ergin safhaya ulaşınca, çiçekbaşında 7-10 gün kadar beklerler ve daha sonra, taş altı gibi uygun hipernasyon yeri bulmak için buradan çıkarlar. Bu türe dahil hortumlu böcekler, taş altında gizlenmek için 1-3’ü biraraya gelme şeklinde bir davranış sergilerler. Bu bağlamda L. onopordi yilda 1 nesil verir.

Phytophagous insects represent a major part of world’s biodiversity. Most hypotheses explaining this extraordinary diversity refer to small body size, specialization on many different microhabitats, short generation time, ability to open up new resources and host plant shifting. Use of the rostrum for excavating an oviposition site in a plant structure can be seen clearly as a key point in explaining diversity within Curculionoidea (Order: Coleoptera). The development of a long rostrum in females of Curculionoidea allowed invasion of a new adaptive zone through excavation of oviposition sites in plant parts otherwise not previously available as food sources for immature stages. The evolution of host choice and knowledge of how this might affect the speciation process is important for an understanding of this diversity. Considerable attention has been paid to the formation of host races, generally concentrating on host shifts occurring in sympatry.

The weewil genus Larinus comprising ca. 180 species is represented by approximately 140 species in the Palaearctic. Larinus is species-richest in the Mediterranean where about 100 species occur. The main host plant of Larinus onopordi is E. sphaerocephalus (Great globe thistle) in Northeast Anatolia, but rarely prefers E. orientalis to complete their generation in this plant. Overwintered adults associated with host plants from mid May. After feeding several days on leaves, they mate and laid their eggs in flowerheads using rostrum by excavation of the oviposition hole. In addition, the adults damage the stem below flowerhead opening vertical holes. Adult activity period lasted approximately 44 days. Adult population rise to a peak level in the last week of May. Mating activity duration lasts approximately the adult activity period which is 37 days. After depositing eggs, females close on eggs a pale green secretion then this secretion dried, hardened and turned black. The eggs are laid superficially and it is easy to see the eggs when opening this dry secretion. Eggs occurrence span is 33 days. Hatching and feeding in flowerhead larvae continue to grow untill mid September. Larval period duration is 79 days. From the third week of July, pupae is seen in Flowerhead. If there are more than one larva or pupa in one flowerhead, this flowerhead abnormally shaped. Pupa duration is 51 days. Upon reaching the new generation adult stage, they wait in the flowerhead 7-10 days and emerge from here for find a suitable hibernating site such as under stones. This weevil shows an aggregation behavior which is possibly seen in 1-3 specimens together hiding under a stone for hibernation. In this way, L. onopordi produced one generation per year.

Superb capture of these two interesting looking insects. The first thing that came into mind when I saw this photo was that they reminded me of a well known entertainer here in the US. from my childhood days, Jimmy Durante.
