Carcharodus alceae (Hatmi Zıpzıbı) [Eng. ‘Mallow Skipper’]

Hatmi Zıpzıbı 22-30 mm kanat genişliği ile küçük boyutlu bir kelebektir. Erkeğin üstaraf zemin rengi gri kahvedir. Açık ve koyu kahve lekeler, karakteristik bir desen şeklinde, dış kenara paralel bandlar şekillendirir. Ön kanatta küçük, parlak beyaz benekler bulunur. Arka kanadın dış kenarı oldukça girintili çıkıntılıdır. Ön kanadın alt tarafı, üst tarafına benzer olmakla birlikte koyu lekelerden yoksundur. Arka kanadın zemin rengi nispeten daha açık kahve olup, dağınık beyaz lekelidir. Dişisi erkeğine benzer olmakla birlikte, çoğunlukla daha büyük olup daha açık renkli bir alt tarafa sahiptir.

Esasen Orta ve Güney Avrupalı bir tür olmakla birlikte, dağılışı Kıbrıs adası dahil Türkiye ve Kazakistan’a, kuzey Hindistan’a kadar uzanır. Ergin kelebekler Şubat’da (bazen Ocak’ta) görülmeye başlar ve Kasım’a kadar peş peşe nesiller halinde uçarlar. Güz dönemi esnasında sayısal açıdan dikkate değer bir atış vardır. Küçük tırtıllar halinde kışı geçirirler. Tırtıl konak bitkileri Malvaceae (Ebegümecigiller, Hatmigiller) ailesine dahil çeşitli türlerdir. Kıbrıs adasında, Hatmi Zıpzıbı’nın Malva sylvestris (Adi Ebegümeci) üzerine yumurtladığı kaydedilmiştir. Tırtılları, konak bitki yaprak kenarlarının katlanması ile meydana gelen koruyucu bir barınak içinde yaşar ve gelişirler.

Makilik, açık herdem yeşil yumuşak yapraklı çalılıklar, frigana (oldukça düşük boylu çalılık ve otluklar), zirai alanlar, nehir vadileri ve ormanlık alanlar gibi çok çeşitli habitatlarda deniz seviyesinden 2500 m irtifalara kadar kaydedilmiştir. Ebegümecinin yetiştiği tarla ve yol kenarlarına yakın olacak şekilde, düşük irtifalarda ve tepelik bölgelerde daha yayındır. Çoğu kez aynı türden bireylerle birlikte hızlı zıplama hareketleriyle yere yakın uçarlar ve kanatlar neredeyse her zaman açık şekilde yere konarlar. Yerde, dallarda veya kuru otlar arasında dinlenirler. Çeşitli çiçeklerden beslenirler, güzün Dittrichia (=Inula) viscosa (Anduz Otu) çiçekleri daha çekici gelir.

Mallow Skipper is a small butterfly with a wingspan of 22-30 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is grey-brown. Light and dark brown marks form bands parallel to the outer margin, in a characteristic pattern. On the forewing there are small, shiny white spots. The outer margin of the hindwing is strongly dentate. The underside of the forewing is similar to the upperside but lacks the darker markings. The ground colour of the hindwing is a lighter brown with scattered white marks. The female is similar to the male, but is usually larger and has a lighter-coloured underside.

Indeed it is a species of central and southern Europe, its range extends through Turkey, including Cyprus island, and Kazakstan to northern India. The adult butterflies begin to emerge in February (sometimes in January) and are on the wing until November, in successive broods. There is a noticeable increase in numbers during the autumn period. Overwinters as a small larva. The larval host-plants are various species of the Malvaceae family. In Cyprus island, Mallow skipper has been recorded laying on Malva sylvestris (Common Mallow). The larva lives and develops in a protective shelter, which it constructs by folding together the edges of a leaf of the host-plant.

It is recorded in a wide range of habitats such as maquis, garrigue, phrygana, agricultural land, river valleys and forest, from sea level to 2500 m elavations. It is very common in lowland and semi-mountainous areas, close to crops and road verges where the Common Mallow grows. Flies with a rapid, whirring motion, often in the company of others of its species. Remains close to the ground and almost always alights with its wings open. Rests on the ground, on branches, or amongst dry grass. Feeds from a variety of flowers and in autumn is attracted to those of Dittrichia (=Inula) viscosa (False yellowhead).

Apparently Gediz is quite an important wetland: did you go there for a specific reason?

As I mentioned somewhere else - your filing system is number 1 - to find all these photos after 2 years plus the notes...

I often wonder if these butterflies are very delicate?!? i.e. can they still fly after being touched, the scales disturbed? You can see, I have never had anything to do with butterflies after living for over 20 years in an area without flowers...

But here at the dam I have sen already lots of buds - so may be - I'll see butteflies as well!

You may be right about the ID of this pair of Skippers in copulo but it is often difficult to distinguish Carcharodus species.
This is a fine capture of what seems to be C. alceae from your collection, the sharpness and lighting helping to make them stand out from the OOF but similarly coloured BG.
