Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa) running through the snow. In the UK this very pretty bird is mainly found in arable fields with lighter soils. Like many game birds they spend most of their time on the ground and can run quite fast. The main threat to this species is hybridisation - the closely related Chukar (Alectoris chukar) is sometimes released by irresponsible game keepers, allowing the species to cross breed.

I was able to take pictures of this one from my car window before it became nervous and started to run across the snowy field. You can just see the tiny grains of snow its feet are kicking up behind it. The resulting shot has been cropped and sharpened.

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com

Hi Vinny. It looks like ypu picked the right day to out over the weekend. The Red-legged Partridge is a bird i have not been able to get any pictures of as yet so thanks for posting this fine close up in the snow. which shows the feather detail of to its best. Taken with sharp focusing and bright natural colours. It has very nice markings around the head area. TFs.

Hello Vinny,
A superb almost frame-filling portrait of a Red-legged Partridge, the OOF snowy Bg helping to show it up. The exposure, sharpness and colours are excellent.
I wish we had this species in Sweden!
(But I think it was introduced into Britain and I think another name is French Partridge).
Nice to view!
Thanks, kind regards,

very nice portriat, is this species native in the UK? I hope it is not hunted. greetings Ori
