These creatures really love symetry ;)

If you take a closer look you may notice that the poses of first three couples of larves feeding on opposite sides of the leaf are very similar. What is a bit surprising even their sizes are similar.

This is my second picture of sawfly larves. The first one you can see here. This is a different species found on a willow tree in my garden.

Most sawflies larves feed on plants, usually openly on leaves. Some of them may feed singly. Such larves are almost always well camouflaged.

The sawflies from my picture belong to the distinctly gregarious ones. They feed in big groups, often creating such, very symetrical arrangement. I've seen it several times. I think that helps them to use the space in the most efficient way. It's important for them to be close because it's easier to defence then.

The sawflies are brightly coloured that may be a sign for predators that they are unedible. If the enemy isn't still sure whether or not eat them there's another way to scare him. The larves start to move in a very coordinate way, usually wriggle their tails - make so called body lashing.
It looks quite amazing so they can really confuse the predator doing that.

Some of the species (I'm not sure if this one too) produce chemical defence secretions which can cause skin irritation. Last summer one of the sawfly larves eat all leaves from a small willow growing in my garden. It was a different species - bright greenish yellow ones. When you get closer and they noticed you they started to wriggle their tails and secrete orange liquid that smelled in a very unpleasant way. When a drop fall on your skin it was a feeling as if it was an acid.

Hope you will find this post interesting.

Hi Monica
What a lovely study in symmetry. You have done very well to capture this. It tells me that being at the top is not always the best place to be as in this case the top guy is the odd one.
Very good composition and POV, the colours could maybe improve a bit with some saturation, the DOF is great with the lovely blue sky as BG, and the exposure was good.
Very nice work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Yeah, this picture remainds me books about team work and cooperation by Kothler and Stoner, which I read during my studies. Fantastic moment! Sure candidate for cover of nature magazine. Clear and perfect composition, very interesting note. I like fragment about chemical defense - you know - I like this kind of stuff - poisons, acids, etc. :-)

Monika, I had NO idea what you had here by looking at the thumbnail!!
Perfect symmetry, it is quite amazing how they are all positioned like this along the leaf edges! Well shown, and terrific notes to read.
Well done

Hi Monika,
Excellent shot, good exposure and detail. As in your note, the way the opposing larvae are the same size is amazing! Your note is great, a good example to people joining on what they should be aspiring to. Great post.

Adrian

Hi Monica,

Very well capture, Perfect symmetry, colors details very well done. THF

Thank you

Hehe, strange natural (and distructive) symetry! (I'm asking myself, does they do this in purpose, as coordinated by some genetic trigger or it's just a pure chance to meet'em like that?)
You got a really good eye for these things, girl!

Regards, Petru

This is an interesting capture, I like the arrangment it makes for an excellent shot. Well done Monika, :)

Hello Monika,
I do find this very interesting.
Its a very good capture.
Nice detail and an excellent POV.
I see that the smallest one at the top has the least ammount of leaf to go at!
A great shot and an interesting note.

Hello Monica , Very good shot I never seen this before ,
good compositie colours pov and dof ,Greeting Teunie .

Hi Monika, Excellet photo. What did you pay them to pose for you like that. One of those rare ones that is not just a photo, but a very good piece of photographic art. Focus could have been a little sharper, but does not distract from the scene. Well done.

Wow..very beautifull.
Well done

Hi Monica,
Superb composition. It looks just like they were posing for you performing some acrobatic act like in a circus, doing a pyamid, with one person on top. Yes, and then they also are dressed up like clowns, with orange heads and striped costume. And so is your performance, simply outstanding, Patrick

Hi Monika,
superb contribution,
showing the rhythms of nature in a cool, but very poetical way.
Very interesting and unusual.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Big Smile.

A different style of post from you Monika,
But still from the same lovely, sweet photographer ;)
Very good capture, the similarity in the opposite larves is remarkable.
As always, very good shot, good framing, detail, colour, sharpness, composition, exposure, perfectness and sweetness ;)
Thanks for posting, have a perfect week my friend.

Very nice. Symmetrically well framed leave by these guy, what the upper guy distracts in pleasant way. Seems like he's late to finilize the composition. Excellent piece of art.
