Blue-headed Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava flava)at Friskalanlahti nature reserve (Turku, Finland).

This is the other part of the mixed couple I presented yesterday. It seemed be to together with Dark-headed Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava thunbergi).

From Birdguides:

Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava

In: Yellow Wagtail Ca: Cuereta groga Da: Gul Vipstjert De: Schafstelze Es: Lavandera boyera Fi: keltavästäräkki Fr: Bergeronette printanière It: Cutrettola Nl: Gele Kwikstaart No: Gulerle Pt: Alvéola-amarela Sv: Gulärla US: Yellow Wagtail Ru: Желтая трясогузка

The races which have grey heads may look superficially like Grey Wagtails but they usually have greener or browner backs. The shorter tails and different calls of the yellow wagtails are always conclusive.

Breeds in damp, rushy pastures, water meadows and hay fields.

The race M. f. flavissima with a yellow face is typically found in Britain, but a population also breeds in Holland where they are said not to interbreed with the Blue-headed Wagtails in the same area. This would imply that Yellow Wagtail and Blue-headed Wagtail should be treated as separate species but to do so would involve assessing the claims of all the other subspecies to this exalted status. It has long been argued, for example, that Black-headed Wagtail, with its distinctive calls should be treated separately.

Most birds migrate to the Afrotropics and Asia for the winter although some may winter in some areas of Turkey

hi Pekka,
bonne image de cet oiseau, je ne connaissais pas son existence il y a encore quelques mois. Bon Pov, mais la dof est légèrement perfectible. Bonne couleur naturelle.

Hi Pekka,

A lovely banded Wagtail posing so nicely on his pedestal. Beautiful colors and nice details and of course I love the opened beak. He stands out very well from the blurred background.

I don't think I've ever heard of this type of Wagtail before so thanks for posting this! :-)
Excellent singing pose and a good POV.
Sharp with great clarity.
Superb DOF too.

Well done, Pekka!

Hello Pekka,

This is a beauty!
And you have captured it singing too!

He is creating a fine pose for you on his singing post. You have captured fine details of his plummage which show up well against the dark b/g.

I see he has been ringed.
Would this have happened in Finland, do you think?

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Pekka

A lovely image of this cute little wagtail.
The lighting is warm and the colours are natural and well saturated.
Very well composed in the frame.

Hello Pekka,
Interesting to see a ssp mixture of flava and thunbergi. You made a fine sharp capture of this ringed individual taken from a excellent POV to show the features against a fine OOF BG.
TFS this interesting contribution,

bonjour pekka
un peu de surexposition sur la poitrine de cet oiseau et un leger manque de contraste selon moi mais c'est une belle image malgrés tout.

Hi Pekka,

Great looking bird and you have captured the colours perfectly. Nice pose from the bird and he stands out well against a nice soft background.
