This is “my” river, the river of my childhood. Cold in winter, refreshing in summer, still wild and alive, but threatened by human activities. I couldn’t walk without remember some nice moments, like time spend with my lizards (Podarcis muralis) friends. Photo taken yesterday, during a long walk along the river.

The Ourthe is a 165 km long river in the Ardennes in Belgium. It is a right tributary to the river Meuse. The Ourthe is formed at the confluence of the Ourthe Occidentale (Western Ourthe) and the Ourthe Orientale (Eastern Ourthe), west of Houffalize.
The name of the river Urta was mentioned for the first time during the Gallo-Roman era. It was also, from 1795 to 1814, the name of a French Department, but written without h, the Ourte.
We still can see rare or threatened species of plants (Dactylorhiza maculata, Ranunculus aquatilis, Trientalis europaea, Menyanthes trifoliata, Eriophorum angustifolium…), insects (Euphydryas aurinia, Oxygastra curtisii…), birds (Alcedo atthis, Riparia riparia…), salamanders (Triturus cristatus), mammals (Lutra lutra).
But the river is also recently colonised by invasive plants like Impatiens glandulifera, Fallopia japonica, Heracleum mantegazzianum), a serious threat for the biodiversity of its banks.

Bonjour Catherine,
Merci.
Bonne semaine

Hello Catherine,
A beautiful scene showing that even in the darkness of winter there is beauty to be found!
The golden light of the sun through the clouds makes a B&W version unsuitable and the composition of the bare alder and willow trees against the sky and fields is great with the high water of the river rushing by.
Well done and thanks for sharing a way of brightening up the winter!

Hallo Catherine,
j'aime beaucoup cette image pleine de douce mélancolie, un très beau cadrage.
Merci et félicitations
Bonne journée
Ciao Maurizio

Hello Catherine,
A beautiful winter capture, almost b/w, showing a landscape very similar to wht we have here. I like the point of view, the lovely light and great DOF in this image.
Many thanks and best regards, Ulla

Hallo Catherine
What a wonderful view. I think seeing this for real must be an awesome experience. What a fantastic peace of nature you have captured and how thankful I am that you are sharing it with us. It looks so peaceful and serene and the tranquillity is perceptible. The atmosphere is magic, just as your photography here. Thanks for sharing this wonderful place. Best regards.

Hi Catherine

I really like your note on this one and good to see that you can still find wild places along its length. Certainly looks cold today though, sometimes I wish we had such pronounced seasons.... Good compositon.
Have a wonderful christmas and New Year

splendid scene, the composition the winter colors, very good presentation Catherine, my wishes for Christmas!

Hy Catherine
After your notes describing the diversity that could be found there, I hope I will visit once that Ourthe valley. I would like to see clear running waters like in the Ardenns (here we have muddy -still channels) without spectacullar sights. Lovelly composition, freezing atmosphere. But a question: how did you obtain this format: you made a crop, because is not like a veritical picture taken with the camera. Do you have a secret??

All the best,

Hi Cathy,
Fantastically composed landscape almost with monochromatic tones... Absolutely beautiful and with full of tranquillity. Bravo. At the same time I hope you'll once return to the site.
Best regards, László
