Khustai Nuruu National Park

It is difficult to see reintroduced Takhis (=Przewalski horses) in their native habitat because they are keeping a good distance to unknown things. But in Khustai the horses are now used to visitors in cars that stick to a given circuit. In the minds of wild animals such cars become "neutral big game". The behaviour is well known from African Safari circuits.

Takhis had become extinct in the wild at the end of the sixties or so. Some of the last animals were shot by European hunters for a price and to garner a lot of points in international hunter's circles. The reintroduction of Takhis from European zoos to Mongolia has so far been successful, but it is a costly enterprise. For over twenty years Takhis have been reproducing regularly in the wild again, Mongolia's enigmatic animal is back. Harsh winters and wolves take their toll but this has always been part of the life of wild Takhis.

Hmmh … the grass in front should according to my lights be Achnatherum splendens.

Hello Dietrich,

Hope you are well. This is a marvellous , panoramic shot of the grassland and the beautiful, graceful reintroduced horses of your wonderful land. The wintry landscape looks elegant as do the horses and you have a million dollar note there which is as invaluable as are the horses or your land. Thanks a lot for sharing all, take care,

warm regards/Abid

A great shot showing these iconic animals in their natural habitat.

Best regards

The scale of this autumnal capture is colossal, Dietrich, and the animals are dwarfed in it. The seared grass in the background adds to the appeal of this landscape from Mangolia.

Lieber Dieter,
