Rajah Brooke Birdwing
Trogonoptera brookiana

The Rajah Brooke butterfly is a distinctive black and electric-green birdwing butterfly from rainforests in Borneo and Malaysia. This butterfly is the national butterfly of Malaysia. The wings of the male butterflies are black and each forewing has seven teeth-shaped electric-green markings (the smaller hindwings are also black with green markings). The wings of the female butterflies are browner with prominent white flashes at the tips of the forewings and at the base of the hindwings. The head is bright red and the body is black with red markings. The larval host plant is Aristolochia foveolata. Adults sip fruit juices and flower nectar.
Classification: Family Papillonidae
Subfamily Papilloninae.

This butterfly was named by the naturalist Alfred R. Wallace in 1855, after Sir James Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak.

This shot was taken at the Butterfly Sanctuary in Penang.

Hola Manyee. Esplendida foto. Exelentes colores y finos detalles en su captura. Muy nitida. Luis52.

You sure do get some sharp images with that camera. I suspect you used a flash for this one. Have you ever tried turning the intensity of the flash down a little? It might cut a little of the glare. The variety in the butterfly world amazes me more every day.

Hello Manyee!

What a beautifull and exotic butterfly! Great composition, POV and details, but first of all I like colours. Green triangles on black BG look perfect!

Hi Manyee,

A beautiful capture of this bird wing butterfly looks like they are relative to swallowtails. Lovely colors with excellent details and composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Manyee, wonderfull shot wih slpendid colors, perfect focus and lovely pose, good diagobnal composition,
well done,

Hello Manyee,

What a beautiful species! And a beautiful name! I wonder if it lives in the wild because I've seen most of the longwings photos were taken in butterfly houses or similar places where they are protected. I wish we had such a house here in Romania too.
The diagonal composition works very well with this subject. It is much better than placing it horizontally. The butterfly looks very good on the natural green background.
A very good balance between the natural and artificial light. I wonder what caused the shadow? A funny answer would be "the butterfly" (chuckle). Probably the sunlight because it seems to low for the flash.
The exposure was well controlled to render great details in the black wings. Well done! Thank you!

With Friendly Regards,

This soooooooooooooooooo beautiful. What a lovely butterfly. I looks like a piece of artwork.
Really impressive. Never thought I’ll be fond of a black butterfly, but this is really something else. The green is really electric and attracts the eye.
Although belated I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on becoming grandma. I followed your postings done from China with interest and found it very delightful. Your whole portfolio speaks of your love for photography. Thank you also for your informative note. I enjoyed that very much.
Thanks for sharing.

Great colors on the butterfly - - - red, green, black...beautiful. Wonderful contrasts and sharpness. Good details down to the pattern of dried water spots on the leaf. :)

Hello Manyee,
Wow, I remember this giant butterfly from Penang too. They only had one specimen at that time and it was resting well-hidden behind large banan leaves! Your capture is excellent, very sharp and in natural colours. Well composed too. I believe it is quite rare in the wild.
TFS and regards, Ulla
