This post is from my third mantis shoot this season.
The shot has been taken handheld in late evening, Raw to jpeg & framing done.

A praying mantis, or praying mantid, is the common name for an insect of the order Mantodea.

Like all insects, a praying mantis has a three- segmented body, with a head, thorax and abdomen. The abdomen is elongated and covered by the wings in adults. Females have strong and large cerci. The first thoracic segment, the prothorax, is elongated and from it arises the modified foreleg.

Mantids, with their huge compound eyes mounted on a triangular head, have a large field of vision. They use sight for detecting movement of prey and swivel their heads to bring their prey into a binocular field of view. They have a fully articulated head, and are able to swivel it 180 degrees as well as pivot it. Their antennae are used for smell.

Being a carnivorous insect, the mantis feeds primarily on other insects. However, it is not uncommon for larger mantids to consume small reptiles, birds and even small mammals.

To capture their prey, mantids use their camouflage to blend in with the surroundings and wait for the prey to be within striking distance. They then use their raptorial front legs to quickly snatch the victim. It then uses the front legs to help position the victim so it may eat it better.

One word: WOW! I love this, especially how you have it surrounded in blackness. It really helps bring the mantis into focus so that he pops. Excellent job! It's so focused and detailed and I love the lighting.

Hi Pankaj

Lovely camera work. It is a great result for shooting this one hand held and at night. The flash provided excellent light on the subject and the darkness of the night ensured a splendid neutral black BG to enhance the bright green mantis.

Good sharp details, lovely colours, and the composition is also very good. I like how the twig delivers the insect into the frame.

Well done and TFS.
Best regards

Good one - well isolated from the BG. Great portrait - maybe a tad harsh due to the flash illumination - but all in all spectacular! Good work, Pankaj!

Hello Pankaj,
That is a very pretty Mantis you have got in your picture. Or is it that your picture has made it look good? :)
Perfect sharpness and details with an excellent POV and skillful use of Flash light to bring out the colours and contrast in the best way. I remember your previous shots of Praying mantis , all of them equally good. I have tried to photograph it but each time I look at it through Macro it reminds me of those alien creatures that we see in the movies. But somehow when I se them in your pictures, they all look very attractive. Must be the master photographer in you.:)
