Yellow pansy - Junonia hierta cebrene

This pansy is especially dedicated to Manyee. Since I joined TN she has been a great friend and advisor and I just wanted to say THANK YOU by means of this lovely butterfly.

It is another one of the butterflies I encountered in the Pretoria zoo at the African savanna waterhole. For the full story on this experience you can view the notes on my previous posting African leopard.

The sexes agree in ground colour but differ somewhat in markings. A small and very attractive butterfly, being rather conspicuous with its yellow, brown and blue colours. The under side in both sexes is generally biscuit coloured with the forewing nearly yellow, which has two black dots that are corresponding with the spots or ringed eyes on the upper surface. The hind wing is relieved with shading and lining in brown.

Female: Forewing, upper surface with black or brown borders and with an irregular yellow patch in the centre. The apex with a yellow mark below which is a small black ring with a purple centre. The sub-marginal band is more distinct at the apex. Near the lower angle is another ring as broad as the interspace, but in some specimens this ring is enveloped in a triangular projection from the brown margin.

Hind wing, upper surface with basal portion, black or brown enclosing the purple blotch. The outer half with a yellow patch containing one or more black spots sometimes with a purple centre and in some specimen’s only small black dots. The outer margin black or dark brown with a sub-marginal broken yellow band. Wing expanse is 40-50mm.

Male: The male differs from the female in having no sub-marginal broken yellow band and in having no ringed marks, but a black spot, sometimes enveloped in a triangular projection from the brown hind margin near the lower angle of the forewing. The yellow patches in both wings are brighter and more regularly defined than in the female. Wing expanse is 40-45mm.

The male establishes territories close to patches of open ground. They are fond of damp earth and wet sand near streams, and rotting fruit; also flowers. Also found in parks, gardens, flatlands, and hillsides.

Common and widespread. From W Cape through warmer, moister Karoo areas into grassland and savanna of the Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Swaziland, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, NW provinces and N Cape.

It often settles on the ground or on grass with its wings spread. The flight is rapid and is characterised by alternate wing beats and glides with the wings horizontal. The insect is alert and is not easily approached nearer than about twelve feet.

Flight period
This butterfly is on the wing throughout the year in warmer areas and peaks during Oct to Nov, and Feb to May.

Hey Loot, thanks a lot. : )
I really appreciate your gesture,
and I love this beautiful pansy. : )
We know you guys have amazing wildlife, magnificent birds, gorgeous flowers... and now we see that you also have stunning butterflies. : )
This one is particularly striking because of the iridescent blue patches on the already colorful orange and brown wings. I also like the different shades of orange on the light spots.
The POV on this one, as on all the other butterflies you have posted to date, really shows off the markings in all their glory. You managed to capture this one from a perfectly parallel plane, thus ensuring excellent focus throughout. This pansy is nicely exhibited against the blurred green background, with just a single bloom to counterbalance it in the overall composition.
A very special image that makes me feel very special. : )
Thanks again, my friend. : )

bonjour Loot,
lovely specimen capture here, superb colors, nice POV/DOF, good work,
bravo Martin

Wow Loot, this is very pansy-like - what a beauty. Looks so much like a flower in bloom. Good POV, especially on this angle and with the blurred spent flower in the BG. And I love the colours too. Well captured, thank you,

Hi Loot,
a lovely butterfly, never seen this before.
The composition and POV are very good. The flower to the right is a bit distracting, maybe you could chose another angle if it was possible, but thats nature.
Lovely colours and the DOF is good too, it helps the subject to stand out nicely from the BG.
Very well done, mf.

Hi Loot,
A bit of a late one last night (work not fun!!). Just time for a very quick visit.
Thanks for posting, well worth a big smiley.

The colors in this butterfly stand out so well, almost like a neon light shining. I like the diagonal presentation very much, and the blurry flower bud behind, well done.

Hi Loot, great close up with excellent details and colours. The butterfly is well positioned at an angle within the frame and a good POV. The texture in the wings is also very good. Well done and TFS, sorry for not being around lately, been busy with the arrival of my new daughter.
Best Wishes,

Hi Loot

This is a very nicely composed shot. The diagonal placement looks great. I like how you have kept the OOF flower head on the right. This is really well done. Thank you!

Hi Loot!
The beauty of this image is beyond comparison. I like the way you have placed the subject vis-a-vis the blurred flower bud in the BG.
The species is very beautiful with bold colour patterns on the wings. The focus is so sharp all the details stand out beautifully.
Thanks for sharing this brilliant image.

Hi Loot,
Another fantastic Butterfly shot, beautiful colours on this. The oranges and browns with that bright blue are really quite striking. A bit more 'glamorous' than the Cabbage Whites I see in my garden :-)

Fantastic detail and that unusual floating effect again. A nice colourful background that is not distracting due to the good aperture choice. Nicely framed with the plant off to the right, excellent work!

Hi Loot,
I've never seen such a colourful butterfly.
Most I love the glittering blue spots.
I also like the arrangement so much, excellent in the diagonal pose, thanks

Hello Loot,
Glad to see that someone decided to post in a consistent way some South African butterflies. The European, North and South American, even Asian ones are quite well represented here. Not the African ones, which is a pitty, because they are beautiful and so unknown to us. Everybody who is photographing in Africa posts the spectacular large game, which is understandable, hower I really appreciate to see something else than the big game from that corner of the planet.

Regards, Petru

Hi Loot,
Thanks for Sharing this beautiful image, you have done extermely well to capture this beauty in full glory, as a person who have been shooting lots of butterflies of late , i can tell you this shot is right up there!.
The diagonal composition has really worked out very well here!
I have been trying to get fella on to a leaf/ flower a lot many times , but he always sits on the ground , you can see that from my shots so really i can tell you this is my dream shot.
Have a great week
Happy Clicking

you really have some stunning butterflies out there and I'm glad you are starting to photograph them for us all to see. I really like the composition on this one and to be honest everything else has already been said, so there is not much left to say other than TFS and keep up the good work.

Hi Loot
This butterfly is really beautiful and you show it from a perfect POV against a colorful blurred OOF background. A great shot.
TFS, José M.

Excellent capture and perfect composition Loot. The colours are just ´wonderful and they look even better on wings in such great condition as they are on this picture. Great sharpness with plenty of details in the wings. The background is well blurred to set of the bf nicely. Great job and very handsome model all folloowed by a great note - thanks.

By the way - I fully agree about Don's pictures I just don't have the energi do go into these discussions. I think the best way is to stop comments on his post and he will read the message and vanish all by himseld.

You are right is a lovely butterfly that you have very well captured ! Good DOF with a nice flower button OOF. Colors, exposure and sharpness. Interesting complementary note.
Your Sigma lens seems to be a good choice with the 350D...
Congratulations my friend and thanks for sharing.

Hi Loot, lovely compo, sharpness and colors. I might be tempted to crop the OOF flower on the right as it tends to draw the eye away from the subject. Alternatively flip the photo horizontally.

Ps. I have a b/fly that I can not ID would you be so kind as to look it up in your book??

Hi Loot
the colours and beauty of this butterfly are really awsome!
the composition , DOF and POV are perfect and make this a great nature photography!
also want to comment on the BG giving a special mood to the composition

Hej Lot!
Masz pieknego motyla. Ostrosc wspaniala i kolory tez. Kadr bardzo mily dla oka. Dziekuje za mile wrazenia.

Hi Loot,
A lovely butterfly, never seen this before.
The composition and POV are very nice.

Thank you for sharing.

My friend Loot
Another spectacular image of a butterfly and this time there is no chocolates involved, only loads and loads of beautiful colours and patterns and splendour. A very special dedication and as I read Manyee's feedback, it was much appreciated. I can also only just repeat what Zeno said "Your note is impressing. I like the way you describe your photo's" I like the blue spots on the wings and it makes this butterfly special, and the flower in the background is placed exactly right in the framing. EXCELLENT my friend EXCELLENT! Thanks for posting. Best regards,
Warmest regards.

Hallo Loot
You deserve each of your points over and over. You are an excellent photographer with lots of talent. Wonderful capture of this Yellow Pansy. Excellent depth of field that keeps the whole butterfly in perfect focus but blurrs the background notably. Vibrent colours and awesome patterns on the wings. As usual a flawless presentation with superb sharpness. Truly precise in every aspect, with excellent framework. I appreciated looking at this beauty.
